Today is the 4^th of July, the day we celebrate the birth of our nation. In thinking about this day, my mind drifts to all the struggles our country has pushed through over the years and where we are today. Starting July 4, 1776 when America declared its independence from England to 1860 when states began to secede to form the Confederate States to present day, freedom has comes at a cost and there are always challenges.  

History is a funny thing. We sometimes learn from it but often times forget hard learned lessons when life offers too many gifts, fortune and times remain good for too long.  People, companies and countries can lack the humbleness required to continue growing in a healthy way.

It seems we are at another crossroads in our country and this time it comes when the industry I have been a part of for almost half of my life faces challenges and change as well. The questions are many but in my opinion the enemy is almost certainly within.

My dad used to tell me average was simply the best of the worst and the worst of the best. The real estate industry during the past decade leading up to the mortgage and real estate crisis skated by with low expectations from consumers and lower expectations from ourselves as a profession. I have thought about this lately, talked about it on a radio show with other professionals and have come to a simple conclusion; I must continue to raise my own standards of service and dedication to those I am fortunate enough to work with and for.

A person I greatly respect mentioned going to a surf shop today and they noticed a bumper sticker saying simply "Begin Within". In a world where most bumper stickers, shirts and people are trying to tell us what we should be doing or thinking, Begin Within sounds like a good plan for me. Instead of blaming others for the economy or politics or the real estate market's challenges I think it is time to sweep my side of the street first.

Even with all the battles we face in the real estate industry and in our country, I believe our best days are ahead of us. Opportunity is always there during difficult times. I think the only thing that could stop my profession or my country is the enemy within.

July 4, 2010, a day of freedom, is a great day to use that freedom to give to those I am really blessed to spend my life with. Happy Birthday U.S.A.

A Carlsbad Community Event See Gary Vaynerchuk Live

Gary Vaynerchuk is going to be at the Carlsbad Library on Dove Wednesday November 4^th from 5:00pm to 6:30pm to discuss his new book Crush It!

In August I was fortunate to see Gary speak and was immediately taken by his massive amount of energy and no nonsense approach to having a more impactful life through following your passion.
